About Us

New Education Group - Foundation for Innovation and Research in Education (NEG-FIRE) is a non-profit, non-sectarian, national NGO registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860; promoting quality Pre-primary & Primary education for marginalized communities (dalit and tribal) by partnering with multiple stakeholders including government departments, community groups, and NGOs across 7 states in India. Our program focus is to ensure quality education among children of these marginalized communities through - mother tongue based multi-lingual (MTB-MLE) education intervention, promotion of inclusive practices, active participation of communities, teachers (govt.) trainings etc., which enhance performance and development of children within the government school system. Role overview: The Executive Director (ED) will ensure that NEG-FIRE’s vision and mission is translated into actions within the policy framework and guidelines set by its Governing Board. The ED will draw upon strengths of key stakeholders, other network partners and NEG-FIRE and will work towards achieving the shared mission by promoting collaborative processes, mutual-respect and mutual-learning spirit.

The ED will set the direction for strategic plans and create pathways for mobilising the required resources for its realization. The ED will have experience and expertise in NGO finance management.

The ED is responsible for creation of respectful, empowering, and result-oriented work culture that enables the team to realise their full potential.

The ED will be the Ex-officio Secretary for the Society; and will be responsible for the management and administrative functions of the Society, as per the MoA, NEG-FIRE’s Governance guidelines and the directions of the Board.

Key Responsibilities include:

Organizational Leadership

  • Develop long-term and short-term strategic plans and pathways to realise NEG-FIRE’s vision and mission.
  • Develop a robust program strategy and shape plans for sustainability of NEG-FIRE’s intervention model, through strategic collaboration with Government, Community and other stakeholders.
  • Responsible and accountable for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
  • To expand the donor-base and ensure financial sustainability to support NEG-FIRE’s mission.
  • The ED as mentor of the team will strengthen participatory processes for effective management of programs, human resources, administration, and finance functions.
  • Promote leadership across the organization by creating opportunities for enhancing capacities/competencies of team members
  • Promote an empowering work culture that motivates team members to maximize their potential to contribute towards NEG-FIRE’s mission.
  • Scan all aspects of the wider environment in which the organization works and enable the organization to effectively manage its mission in fluid and dynamic circumstances.

Governance (as Ex-officio Secretary)

  • The ED, as Ex-Officio Secretary will be responsible for management and administration of the Society. S/He will be the in-charge of its offices and undertake overall coordination, administration and implementation of the decisions of the General Body and Governing Board. He/she shall inform the Governing Board on all essential aspects of the management of the society and regularly and periodically update the Chairperson.
  • In addition to such duties and functions as may be assigned to him/her by the Governing Board from time to time, the ED will be responsible to secure effective coordination between the General Body, Governing Board, and the Administrative units of the Society.
  • To ensure proper and efficient execution of the policies and directives as defined from time to time by the General Body or the Governing Board.
  • Responsible for submitting to the Board the proposed annual budget and periodic financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.

External Interface

  • As the Head of the Institution, S/he shall establish and maintain cordial relationship with governments, civil society organizations, corporates, academic institutions, and donors, and other stakeholders, to promote the vision of the Society – transformation of the marginalized children in the country, through promoting quality education.

Any other assignments as and when required by the Board for realizing the organizational objectives.

Required Qualifications and Competencies

  • Master’s or equivalent degree in Social Sciences/Education / Social Work / Management / Development studies, etc.
  • Minimum 15-20 years of experience in the development sector out of which at least 5 years in leading and managing an NGO.
  • Experience of scaling up programs using sustainable models /frameworks
  • Experience of working with Education sector in India will be an additional advantage.
  • Good understanding of human/group/organizational dynamics and ability to effectively manage the same with sensitivity
  • Exhibits highest value of accountability, transparency, integrity, social inclusiveness and secular orientation in the functioning of the organization
  • Inspiring and empowering leadership style with high degree of emotional maturity to lead a diverse team
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English and working knowledge and ability to communicate in Hindi are essential. Knowledge of at least one other Indian language from the area of operation, would be desirable.
