New Education Group - Foundation for Innovation and Research in Education (NEG-FIRE) is a non-profit, non-sectarian, national NGO registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860; promoting quality Pre-primary & Primary education for marginalized communities (dalit and tribal) by partnering with grassroots NGO’s across 8 states in India. Our program focus is to ensure quality education among children of these marginalized communities through - mother tongue based multi-lingual (MTB-MLE) education intervention, inclusive practices, active participation of communities, teachers (govt.) trainings etc., which facilitate in increasing children’s performance and development within the government school system. Position Title:                                            Research & Assessment Specialist

Job Purpose /Role overview: The Research Specialist reports to the Executive Director, will lead participatory action research projects of NEG-FIRE to enhance knowledge by - capturing, analysing and pre-empting change on issues of primary education of children from the marginalised communities. She/He will lead Learning Assessment processes on Language and Math subjects in Government primary schools, in NEG-FIRE’s intervention states. She/He will bring out evidence-based research documents on the issues of primary education for wider dissemination and policy dialogues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute all research projects, starting from scoping to produce research reports/documents.
  • Develop evidence-based research reports that highlight NEG-FIRE’s program intervention trends and best practices from the field.
  • Bring out analytical reports on the impact of our program on primary education, for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead Learning Assessment processes (baseline and end-line) of children in class 1, 2 & 3 on Language and Math subjects in NEG-FIRE’s intervention schools in 7 states.
  • Develop insightful assessment reports and organisational reports to support NEG-FIRE programme team and NGO partners for decision-making.
  • Develop 6-monthly reports on the compelling deliverables that will add value to NEG-FIRE’s program interventions.
  • Accountability for optimal utilisation of the budget set aside for Research and Learning Assessment activities.
  • Extensively travel in NEG-FIRE’s intervention states (even the remotest villages), for all assessment and research activities.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • M.Phil/PhD in Social Sciences, Sociology, Anthropology, or any other related field
  • At least 6 years of hands-on experience in evidence-based action research, working in an NGO
  • Experience in managing and commissioning of research projects/initiatives

Skills and knowledge:

  • Proficient in social research techniques including – observational data collection in the field, in-person interviews, FGDs, literature reviews, etc.
  • Understanding of legal and ethical issues and principles relating to participatory action research
  • Must have excellent analytical skills and documentation of research analysis
  • Knowledge of the social reality (with special reference to education), of the tribal and dalit communities
  • Understanding of innovative pedagogies that enhances learning outcomes among children of marginalised communities
  • Knowledge of government policies in primary education including thorough understanding of RTE and NCF.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Hindi; and any other regional languages would be desirable

Salary and Benefits:

Between 8 and 9 lakhs (annual Gross), based on candidate’s experience/qualifications and the current salary. In addition, benefits such as – PF, Gratuity, Group Medical and Personal Accidental Insurance, reimbursement of monthly mobile expenses, are covered.
