New Education Group - Foundation for Innovation and Research in Education (NEG-FIRE) is a non-profit, non-sectarian, national NGO; promoting quality Pre-primary & Primary education for marginalized communities (dalit and tribal) by partnering with grassroots NGO’s across 7 states in India. Our program focus is to ensure quality education among children of these marginalized communities through - mother tongue based multi-lingual (MTB-MLE) education intervention, inclusive practices, active participation of communities, teachers (govt.) trainings etc., which facilitate in increasing children’s performance and development within the government school system. Position Title:                                            Research & Learning Specialist

Job Purpose /Role overview: The Research and Learning Specialist reports to the Executive Director, will lead participatory action research in NEG-FIRE to strengthen our knowledge-base by - capturing, analysing the impacts of our interventions, and pre-empting change on the issues of primary education of children from the marginalised communities. She/He will bring out evidence-based research documents on the issues of primary education of the marginalised children, for wider dissemination for visibility, credibility and policy influencing purposes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute all research projects - starting from scoping to produce analytical reports through participatory research methodologies and processes.
  • Bring out evidence-based research reports that highlight NEG-FIRE’s program intervention trends, best practices and impacts of our program on primary education from the field.
  • Disseminate the research findings widely among all stakeholders for visibility and credibility through various means such as – publications, web-based writings, conferences, webinars, paper presentation, etc..
  • Draw analytical data from NEG-FIRE’s web-based M&E system and provide insightful reports to the programme team and NGO partners for program implementation and development.
  • Lead Learning Assessment processes (baseline and end-line) of children in class 1, 2 & 3 on Language and Math subjects in NEG-FIRE’s intervention schools in 7 states.
  • Provide supervisory support to MIS Coordinator for data analysis and reports generation
  • Accountability for optimal utilisation of the budget set aside for Research and Learning activities.
  • Extensively travel in NEG-FIRE’s intervention states (even the remotest villages), for all research and assessment activities.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • M.Phil/PhD in Social Sciences, Sociology, Anthropology, Education, or any other related field.
  • At least 6 years of hands-on experience in evidence-based research in Education
  • Must have experience of working with the marginalized communities (such as tribal, dalits, other most backward), on their educational issues

Skills and knowledge:

  • Strong Research Acumen (qualitative and quantitative) with experience in Participatory Action Research methodologies.
  • Proficient in Social Research Techniques including – observational data collection in the field, in-person interviews, FGDs, literature reviews, etc.
  • Proficient in data analysis tools like SPSS or any other tools
  • Must have excellent analytical skills and documentation of research analysis
  • Understanding of innovative pedagogies that enhances learning outcomes among children of marginalised communities
  • Knowledge of government policies in primary education including thorough understanding of RTE and NCF.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Hindi; and any other regional languages would be desirable

Salary and Benefits:

Between 8 and 9 lakhs (annual Gross), based on candidate’s experience/qualifications and the current salary. In addition, benefits such as – PF, Gratuity, Group Medical and Personal Accidental Insurance, reimbursement of monthly mobile expenses, are covered.
