Musahar and Mahadalit communities work as farm labour

Literacy rates among this community, which upper caste Hindus still consider untouchable, is only 9.8%, the lowest among Dalits in the country. This is the community we serve in Dhobi and Sherghati districts of Gaya in Bihar. Like many other Scheduled Castes, the Musahars are relegated to the most impure work and menial labour with no possibility of upward mobility by the caste system. They have always remained subject to extensive social exclusion and disadvantage. Since they are among the most deprived and marginalised groups in the category of the Scheduled Castes, the state of Bihar has categorised them as Mahadalit (the most downtrodden caste).

Adolescent girls fall further behind due to discriminatory practices and social backwardness; sons are provided the chance to higher education due to poverty, no accessibility within the communities for Life Skills training, dearth of information and so on.

Adolescent girls in these communities want a life with dignity, a life with opportunities, a life that holds hopes for the future. Since these girls and their families struggle to survive each day, the link between education, skill development and poverty alleviation is not obvious to them. Lack of life-skills in these aspects minimizes job/livelihood opportunities and inhibits their access to useful information.
